Get the cheapest guitar and cheapest amp, and play it fast.
With a pick and attitude.
In the 70s maybe, but if you just want the 'sound' those are irrelevant, well, not the pick but....

Punk was such a short lived thing, but seems to have spawned the most bands that claim to be that....it was dead in 77, after that, if you claim to be punk, you are everything punk wasn't imo
The Stooges, MC5 and the New York Dolls were punk in my eyes. These bands predate the late 70's commercialism and fashion of punk.
Nah, the yanks never did punk till it was over, and then it' was week at shiz
That’s just silly.

The US and specifically NYC has the largest claim to punk.

The Velvet Underground were proto punk.

The Ramones are the archetypal punk band.

The glamorisation of punk and its association with fashion and commercialism was orchestrated by Malcolm McClaren and Vivienne Westwood.

The Sex Pistols were the vehicle to commercialise punk. The great Rock and Roll swindle.
