The drums alone were improved performance, for sure.
But in the final mix all you heard was open hihats out of control and kind of stop listening to the mix. Drums were more or less drowned.

- compressor can be as effect as for drums getting ompfff
- compressor can be to even out uneven playing as for bass guitar

When talking about dynamics and keeping interest through a song that is kind of too short to even get a taste of "mixing for blamm".
The song, the arrangement and production make up a song making it interesting or not. Is there tension and release, and is there drama.

- if there is some pre requisite for the lessons, say so
When about to teach something, make a thorough curriculum and what parts to divide it into.
- it's never the students fault unless you state a university class and student is on grammer school level
